From Work Experience to Career With Resolution IT
Jack Thompson speaks to Resolution IT about the transition from full-time education to full-time work, after being offered a Technician position at Resolution IT following his week of work experience with the company.
Jack studied a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Computing at the Guernsey College of Further Education.
Hi Jack! Tell me a bit about yourself, what do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I love researching technology and keeping up to date with the latest trends. I definitely work in the right place because I’m so interested in tech! Outside of that, I love sea swimming, being outside and keeping active.
How did you find your time doing work experience with us? What kind of things did you work on?
I found it amazing. I learned so much – I didn’t realise how much Resolution IT did! There is so much more to IT than I’d imagined. I was lucky enough to work across lots of different teams and get a feel for all the different workstreams at Res. I started with Chris, Resolution IT’s delivery driver, dropping equipment off to clients. I then joined the Business Support team, helping them with procurement and admin jobs. I even got the chance to work with the Cloud Solutions team, learning about Azure. The rest of my time was spent on the service desk, which was so insightful. I learned about our ticketing systems and remote management tools.
This experience was definitely better than I’d expected. I would say it made me want to work here, but the truth is, I’d wanted to work here for ages! I always knew I wanted to be in IT, and Res just seemed like such a great company to be a part of.
Did work experience make the transition from school to full time work easier?
It definitely helped. For one thing, it meant I had already met most of the people in my team, not only from my work experience week, but also from the team socials I’d been invited to prior to starting. The whole transition was really smooth, which I imagine isn’t always the case moving from college to full-time employment.
How have you found your time with Res full time so far?
It’s my third week and I love it. Everyone is so friendly and helpful and I genuinely enjoy my job.
What do your days tend to look like?
Normally I work on tickets, mainly monitoring alerts, and a lot of shadowing as I’m still in training. I get involved in a lot of stuff, new users and leavers, calling clients, things like that. Every day is different which is great.
Have you enjoyed the social side of Resolution IT? Has it made it easier to make friends?
Socials have been brilliant! I’ve made so many friends outside of work and it’s great for team building. It’s lovely to learn more about everyone and talk about things that aren’t related to work.
What are your plans for your future at Resolution IT?
I’m really happy being on the service desk so my aim is to reach Senior Technician level. I like the idea of going off-site, I want to be able to interact with clients too. Being given more responsibility and the opportunity to train and gain certifications will also be great.
Do you have anything else you’d like to add?
If you get the opportunity to do work experience at a company you’re interested in – or even a company you’re not necessarily interested in – you should take it! If nothing else, it’s a great insight into office life and an opportunity to meet new people. And who knows – it might lead to your first career!
