Life in the Information Security Team at Resolution IT

Information Security Analyst, David Cusack, explains what it’s like working in Information & Cyber Security at Resolution IT

Firstly, who are you and how long have you been at Resolution IT?

Hello, I am David, an Information Security Analyst at Resolution IT. I have been at Resolution IT a little over 5 years now, starting off as a Trainee Technician, learning IT support from scratch and working my way up to where I am now.

What does your role consist of?

My primary role is data harvesting and reviewing vulnerability reports, but before I get to do that, I need to ensure that our vulnerability agents are installed on the end points and scheduled reports are setup and working properly so the data is accurate. I then provide reports on a weekly or monthly basis to our clients to show any vulnerabilities and changes made by our Vulnerability Management team. This data is also useful for our quarterly client reports so we can show the progress and challenges we faced in the last quarter and roadmap potential solutions for the quarter ahead.
I also carry out gap analysis to see if the client’s requirements and objectives are being met. By reviewing their setup and documentation, I can ensure they are not falling short of their requirements and advise on any changes needed.
I also assist my colleagues in doing the work needed to get our Cyber Essentials clients to be CE compliant. This work entails communicating with the client, aiding them with the questionnaire and guiding them through any changes required.
On top of that, I am tasked with keeping up to date with the latest trends in the Information Security world to see what improvements can be made to benefit the security of not only clients’ environments but also our own, as well as being aware of the latest vulnerabilities that may impact us and our clients.

What’s your favourite part of your job?

I am a sucker for statistics and efficiencies so I love seeing positive outcomes from my work that show what I am doing is making a difference. Highlighting vulnerabilities and ensuring they are remediated so the end user is as secure as they can be without compromising performance is an extremely rewarding aspect of my job.

What’s your favourite part about working at Resolution IT?

It has become a bit of a cliche for working in IT, but I would have to say the flexibility of being able to work either in the office or work remotely. There have been times when I needed to work on a task or a project and knowing I can work from home so I can focus on what I am doing in peace is a real game changer when the office environment can be known to get loud and distracting when at full capacity.
But as I imagine that will be a common answer, I would have to say I admire Resolution IT’s encouraging nature for development. If you want to push yourself and attain a new qualification to help develop your career, then Resolution IT will do all they can to help you achieve this, whether that means the company pays for the training material or paying for the exam fees or indeed paying for you to attend a course either online or abroad in the UK. I have benefited from this and have in turn given back to the company by utilising my new skills and knowledge, so it is a win/win scenario for both parties.

What advice would you offer to anyone looking to begin a career in Information Security?

Information Security can be a tricky industry to get into even from an entry level perspective and even if you do have some qualifications under your belt. I would say the best way is to get your foot in the door as an IT technician and work your way up. This way you can learn your skills and hone your craft while applying yourself to security-based exams and keep knocking on the door for an opportunity within the Information Security team. Qualifications are important but having that hands on experience to show you know how to troubleshoot issues and navigate around these portals is just as valuable when you transition into the Security world, as you could be using those skills to remediate vulnerabilities.
