Masters Success for Resolution IT’s Oli High!
Oli High, a Technician in Resolution IT’s Guernsey team, has just completed his MSc in Computer Science with Data Analytics
Resolution IT’s Oli High took on a Master’s Degree in Computer Science with Data Analytics from the University of York in 2021, and has just completed it successfully! For this week’s blog, Oli explains a bit more about his Master’s journey.
The Course
I signed up to do an MSc in Computer Science with Data Analytics in September of 2021 from the University of York. The course was delivered 100% online, with the flexibility to study on evenings and weekends, offering a combination of professional experience with the ability to study in parallel to full-time employment. The course consisted of 12-modules and a dissertation-style research project in the final three months.
The Motive
My motivation for enrolling in this course was driven by a combination of time availability off the back of covid lockdowns, and an irregular work pattern in my last role where I worked on-location three weeks on and three weeks off. Although online courses have their limitations, such as not living in your university’s city and missing out on the chance to socialise with other students, the flexibility is really helpful. I was even able to postpone modules at fairly short notice for a travelling trip to Australia and when I first moved to Guernsey to start working at Resolution IT last year.
Resolution IT’s Support
Although I began the course before joining Resolution IT, the support from the company has been excellent. They were able to support me financially by contributing to my tuition fees, as well as providing study leave for my exams and assessments. This support was invaluable, particularly in the second half of my study when larger exams and my final research project were due. This was a huge contrast to my previous employer who provided little to no support. I’m super grateful to Simon and the Res team for facilitating this!
I’d be more than happy to provide more in-depth information about my experience with the University of York for anyone considering a part-time course. I feel that full-time professional experience is invaluable, but I’m grateful I was also able to pursue my studies alongside my role at Resolution IT, facilitated by their generous support.
